Overview

The first ever SOS Children’s Village in Sri Lanka was established with 16 Family Houses in Piliyandala.First group of SOS Mothers, having being trained at Sarvodaya (Local NGO), moved into their New HOMES with children in December 1981. The Village has been home for three generations of children and the present children in the SOS families at Piliyandala are the fourth generation. At present the number of children in the Village is 135 in 16 families. More than 307 children have been successfully integrated into society during the past 35 years.

The first group of SOS Mothers are now retired and many of them continue to live in the Mothers’ Retirement Home which is also situated in the same compound. The SOS Kindergarten, SOS Medical Centre and the Hermann Gmeiner School are popular among the neighbourhood and are catering to the needs of the children and adults of the area. 

Village Impact

With combined efforts from the organization and collective action from the community, SOS Children's Villages Sri Lanka established its first Children's Village in Piliyandala in December 1981.

Family strengthening efforts in the community focus on educational assistance and employability training.

Life in the Village

Youth Facility

SOS Youth Facility for Boys at Piliyandala provides ten scholarships every year. The scholarship is called - Hermann Gmeiner Scholarship - and these are awarded to boys qualified to pursue their studies in General Certificate of Education (GCE)- Advanced Level but who does not have financial means to continue. Scholarship holders come from all parts of the country and receive a two year full scholarship to attend Advance Level classes at Hermann Gmeiner School Piliyandala.

Family Strengthening Programme

SOS Family Strengthening Programme was piloted here at Piliyandala in 2003 prior to it being accepted as an SOS Children’s Villages Programme Intervention. To date, 160 families have graduated from this programme. 583 children and young adults are receiving assistance at present through three Community Centres that have been established in the localities.
